MORE than
100 school leaders yesterday convened for the first day of the Principals and
Deputy Principals from Government Secondary Schools Committee (JAPTIM) work
plan seminar aimed at improving Brunei-Cambridge GCE O and A Level exam results
in the country.
The
two-day seminar at the Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre is part of a work plan that
aims to see government school students achieving a 60 per cent rate in getting
five O levels and above and a 70 per cent rate in getting three A levels and
above in 2017.
JAPTIM
Chairman and Rimba Secondary School Principal Hj Malai Shah Eran Syed Hj Yussof
said the seminar aimed to provide a clear direction for all school leaders on
the Ministry of Education’s aims and target for 2017 and onwards.
Participants
will also be able to review and re-emphasise their roles to improve the
performance of their schools by centering on the designated five focus areas as
well as use the seminar as an avenue to work collaboratively in developing
effective strategies and programmes towards achieving the O and A-Level
targets.
Following
the seminar, every school leader is expected to submit a sound work plan for
effective implementation to their respective schools which will enable the
alignment of the schools’ programmes and strategies with the MoE’s programmes
and initiatives, he said.
Hj Malai
added that a book called ‘Success Stories Revealed’ will also be given to all
school leaders at the end of the seminar which contains reports from performing
schools in 2014 for their reference.
“School
leaders are the agents of change. They (bring) changes to their respective
schools with purpose; that is to improve the performance of the school to the
desired target,” he said.
“(This
seminar) is all about the students – the bar is raised to a level recognised by
the MoE, and we are here to close the gaps to achieve better.
“Thus, we
school leaders are responding to the MoE’s priority on putting ‘students’
matters above all’ and the slogan ‘Raising the Bar and Closing the Gap’,” Hj
Malai said.
MoE
Acting Director of Schools Zaman Hj Gapar urged school leaders to always think
of research and improve strategies for internal evaluation at their schools by
implementing adjustments to improve the quality and standard of internal
evaluations.
He also
urged them to carry out “work-reviews” and “target setting” from time to time
to continuously improve their quality of performance and to strengthen skills
and knowledge in observation and feedback processes to improve teachers’
performances.
He also
reminded school leaders to enhance parental involvement in students’ learning
through Parent-Teacher Association activities as well as systematic and
purposeful meetings.
As part
of the seminar, two keynote addresses were delivered by Universiti Brunei
Darussalam (UBD) Director of Institute of Leadership, Innovation and
Advancement (ILIA) Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati Hj Tajuddin and UBD Dean of
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE) Dr Jainatul Halida Hj
Jaidin.
The MoE
